Nate

Nate

Nate attended UAB for his Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering and then Beeson Divinity School for his Masters in Divinity and is a good friend of many RCC folks. Nate has international experience, working as a contractor in Iraq and doing mission work. His desire to serve the lost and needy has led him to team up with Servant Partners, an organization focused on helping the physical and spiritual needs of over one billion living in urban slums.

Nate will soon be living and serving in the Middle East. His ministry will be an outreach of the local church consisting of evangelism, care for the poor, orphans, and widows, relationship building, and support for local missionaries. The heart and vision of his ministry aligns closely with that of Redeemer and we are thrilled to financially support and send out our dear friend as he gives himself for the Gospel.

Child Sponsorship Program

COI Sponsored Kids Kushbu Pal | Sumit Amit

COl is a Christian Non-Government Organization that operates out of New Delhi, India and has a wide range of ministries specifically to the needy of that society. They focus on church planting, health, women's development, education, the slum children, livelihood projects, and much more.

The children of RCC have chosen to sponsor several children through COl's unique program. Instead of putting neglected and needy children into an orphanage, they place them into homes with family members. The money used to sponsor a child is used for food, education, and Biblical teaching. Another purpose of this Bible-based program is to equip, encourage, and witness to the families of these orphans.

Jonathan & Katie Doub

Jonathan and Katie Doub

Jonathan and Katie Doub have been missionaries in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan since the summer of 2006. They moved there full time in 2007 after they were married. Jonathan is from Winston Salem, NC and Katie is from York, England. Both studied at Calvary Bible College Europe in Hungary.

Jonathan and Katie are currently in Kyrgyzstan helping two other couples plant a church, now at about 200 hundred strong. Their main goal is to train local people to oversee the church and spread the gospel throughout Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia. Jonathan pastors the youth group and Katie leads worship in Russian and Kyrgyz and helps to train local worship leaders and songwriters.

Due to increasing restrictions on Christian outreach and open evangelical events, they now organize trips to the orphanage for kid's festivals, visit the cancer patients at the local hospital, host English clubs, lead basketball camps, and help organize big events for holidays. RCC is excited about the opportunity to support and follow the ministry of this young couple in such a hostile and foreign culture.

Jonathan and Katie have a son, Jackson, born in July 2009.

Christen Sloderbeck

Christen Sloderbeck

Christen Sloderbeck is one of RCC's own, and we are excited to send her out to serve with Christ for Children International (CFCI) in Fresnillo, Mexico from June 2009-July 2010.

CFCI seeks to evangelize and disciple impoverished children and youth, with the goal of raising up mature believers in Christ. Christen will assist the outreaches of the local CFCI church, La Iglesia del Gran Pastor (The Church of the Good Shepherd), by leading kids' outreach clubs on a weekly basis, further discipling some of these children, and helping with a weekly feeding program.

Not Forgotten

Not Forgotten kid

Redeemer Community Church is a partner with Not Forgotten in Puerto Alegria, Peru. Not Forgotten is a non-profit started by Tyler Fuqua and his wife Allison, who are a part of our Redeemer church family.

Not Forgotten is an organization that is compelled by the love of Christ to provide for the physical, educational, and spiritual needs of impoverished, abandoned, and oppressed people of the world so that they may improve their quality of life, find salvation through Jesus Christ, and be empowered to affect change in their communities.

In January 2009, Not Forgotten began funding an education program at the orphanage in Puerto Alegria to improve the level of schooling that the children there receive. The education provided by the local school is incomplete and insufficient. The current teachers must hike an hour and a half every day, both to and from lquitos, through thick and dangerous jungle just to teach in the school. Often times heavy rains (which are very common in the rain forest) prevent the teachers from making the dangerous trek to school. In order to improve both the consistency and the quality of the education the children receive, RCC funds the salaries for two teachers to live at the children's home every week. The role of these teachers is to augment the education that the children currently receive by giving after school tutorials each day, tutoring individual children in difficult subjects, and providing classes when the local school is cancelled. RCC and Not Forgotten partner to equip these boys to be competitive and qualified when applying for jobs, technical schools, and colleges.

Short Term Missions

Peru Team 2009

In addition to supporting the two teachers through Not Forgotten, RCC offers several opportunities to take part in short-term trips to Puerto Alegria. There are typically trips offered 3 times a year: summer, Christmas, and spring. Each trip consists of ongoing construction projects, providing activities and Bible lessons, and spending quality time with the children. These trips are vital in several ways. They establish a fairly regular presence and growing relationship for the young boys, provide the funds and manpower for otherwise impossible projects, bring encouragement and refreshment for missionaries there, and provide an opportunity to expand our view of both the great needs and great provisions of the Lord in the greater world.

Cornerstone Schools of Alabama

Cornerstone student

Cornerstone is an inner-city Christian school located in the heart of the Woodlawn community. Cornerstone is dedicated to helping break destructive cycles, such as poverty, poor education, lack of positive role models, and lack of character development--all of which are common in urban areas. Their vision is "to develop a Christ-centered, world-class learning institute in the inner-city". RCC is privileged to be able to partner with Cornerstone in reaching the inner-city children of Birmingham.

Some of our current involvement with Cornerstone consists of:
  • Cleanup and workdays at the school
  • Speaking twice a week at chapel services
  • Tutoring students
  • FCA/Bible Study for boys and girls

Interfaith Hospitality House

Interfaith Hospitality House entrance

The Interfaith Hospitality House is a very unique outreach of the Birmingham YWCA in Woodlawn. It is the only homeless shelter in Birmingham that provides housing while keeping the family intact and thus, reaches out to a neglected group in our midst. While at the shelter, the families are provided with the tools they need to transition back to independent living over a period of up to 6 months: comfort and stability of housing, counseling (time and money management, psychological), communal support, and many other life skills.

RCC has committed to providing and sharing a communal meal with the residents every Tuesday night. We are continuing to grow in our relationship with the shelter and residents through simple acts like cooking, tutoring, weekend outings, and job skills training. Although not a Christian institution, our commitment to those living at the shelter has allowed us to openly share Christ with them.

Restoration Academy

Restoration Academy

Restoration Academy is a phenomenal Christian school in Fairfield that offers more than just an education to low-income students. Restoration is intent on discipiing students 9 hours a day with the goal of teaching the life-saving Gospel, developing positive character, and buildinq a quality academic foundation. While Redeemer focuses the majority of our community outreaches in our immediate neighborhood of Woodlawn, we have chosen to partner with R.A. due to its incredible influence and ready infrastructure for changing lives in Fairfield. RCC has helped with several community workdays hosted by RA and we continue to grow our relationship and involvement.

Woodlawn Sports Ministry

Every Monday evening from 5:30-7:30 a group of about 40 young boys from the Eastlake and Woodlawn communities gather for flag football and basketball. This gathering is headed up by a guy from Eastlake, Dave Anderson, who has been doing sports outreach with young boys from these areas for about 10 years.

We meet at the Willow Wood Recreation Center just behind Woodlawn High School and play ball, have a good devotional, and share some snacks. This is an awesome opportunity to build relationships with boys who desperately need some male role models, so if sports is your thing or even if not and you would just like to help, come out Monday night!
